What is the Sony Playstation Eye?
Recently, at the yearly Electronic Entertainment Expo conference, Sony presented what they refer to as the Sony Playstation Eye. Sound familiar? You may be thinking of Sony’s EyeToy, a feature for the Playstation 2 that pioneered the recognition of the real time actions of the gamer. The Eye expands on this concept in some fantastic ways, though they are not entirely unseen ones. That being said, it is very hard to fathom just how much this device will actually change the console world, if at all.
For any who missed E3, perhaps the key functions of Sony Playstation Eye is its motion sensing. How this sensing is captured is through the regnition of the glowing orb at the tips of the control distributed for the Eye. Sony’s representatives proceeded to give a live performance of the Playstation Eye’s skills, utilizing the remote to correspond with a 3D interface inside the TV screen and showing just how the technology could be added to categories like first-person shooters, real-time strategy, and also action. All movement the gamer creates with the remote control is captured onscreen with one to one precision.
However, does not that sound somewhat familiar? At last year’s E3, Nintendo accomplished the very same thing using their Wii Motion Plus peripheral. Again it recognises and copies movements at one to one accuracy. The one significant difference involving these separate peripherals is that the Sony Playstation Eye requires an improved type of their EyeToy camera to follow the remotes, whereas Nintendo’s Wii Motion Plus attaches to to an independent sensor bar without cables. If anything, Sony’s latest attempt seems less advanced next to Nintendo’s year-old technology.
Though trailing in the shadow of existing ideas, the Eye remains an excellent piece of hardware that’s guarenteed to excite most every fan of the PS3. Although it cannot significantly alter the realm of game playing altogether, the Sony Playstation Eye accomplishes a good advance for Sony’s credibility, and should maybe help the company recover regarding innovation.
