What Is Darkfall Online?
Gamers all over the world have been anticipating the much awaited release of the newest and most ambitious Massively multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG) – Darkfall Online. It is a game in development by Aventurine SA that is a mesh of both realt-time action gaming and strategy gaming, all found in a fantasy world.
One of the aspects that sets Darkfall apart from other MMORPG’s is that it is expecting to feature various leaps from the conventional gameplay such as: unobstructed PvP (player versus player), complete loot systems, a world that evolves for every action of the player, and a skill system that veers away from the level system and job classes that is staple in most MMORPG’s. The game is currently in its closed beta stage, and is expecting a full release on the 25th of February, 2009.
What is all the hype then for Darkfall if it is just one of those multiplayer games? Basically, it is not your typical MMORPG. Below is a list and a brief explanation on the various improvements Darkfall has made with online role playing.
Unobstructed PvP.
Unlike other MMORPG’s such as World of Warcraft, Darkfall offers no safe zones. The only protection players get are the NPCs (non-playing characters) setup within the cities. Darkfall allows alignment changes, which occurs when a player blatantly kills off another friendly character.
Class-less and level-less MMORPG
Yes, you heard it right. Darkfall has no levels and classes, instead skills determine player capabilities like weapon use, riding ability and even swimming; skills improve with constant use.
Combat
Darkfall has drastically improved its combat system for MMORPG’s. It opens the way for the introduction of real-time combat with first person shooting style fighting, not to mention manually aiming and manually blocking for attack and defense. Ranged combat and overall play will be viewed in the first person perspective, while melee fighting in the third person. Darkfall has eliminated player radars or names to identify NPCs and characters. Damage is viewed through visible sustained damage, blood-splatter, and audio cues. Friendly fire is introduced and emphasized in Darkfall; missed melee, arrow and even spell attacks affect both enemy and friendly units. Even healing spells intended for ally units may affect enemies, too, which has a distinct effect on darkfall gold in the game.
Loot system
Darkfall introduces complete or full looting, meaning all of a player’s items can be looted, or taken by the opposing player upon the character’s death. Construction of in-game materials and items like props, weapons and potions are made available in the game. Likewise, cities can be built, sieged, and destroyed by any player. This of course makes it harder for people to sell darkfall gold.
Additional Combat aspects
Darkfall has also introduced mounted combat, and player mounts, which can be both captured and killed by characters. Darkfall also introduces naval warfare – wherein players may create, board, capture and sink ships. Naval warfare includes both ship to ship and ship to shore combat.
Environment
Darkfall is introducing simulated physics with the real world, including collision detection. Spells, and projectile attacks can be evaded or blocked. Players can be pushed by other players and even by NPCs. Weather can also turn the tides of battle, which is constituted by wind direction, fog and rain which limits player sight and movement.
Monsters
Monsters in Darkfall employ enhanced behavior and AI. They do not simply swing against players, most monsters use different combat tactics based on skills, they may also show social behavior and intelligence levels. Intelligent monsters may attack support characters like healers and casters, and even weakened players. Monster here have n fixed spawning points – instead, they move and relocate to form new communitites. Monsters may fight other monsters, too.
