Many people today are professional poker players and earn a full time better than average (in some cases a lot better than average) income from playing online Poker Tournaments. Of course many of us play poker purely for entertainment purposes with friends as well as strangers especially when playing online poker.
There are even some players who play poker for the purpose of escaping personal debt, and maybe they are playing every day, making poker a much more serious event. This is the most dangerous reason to play poker as the debt threat negatively affects decision making in all but the strongest of mentalities.
If you make the decision to play poker for a living, it is essential to be very responsible. Because you are playing as a profession, you must treat it like any other profession, and approach poker with same responsibility as you would approach an employed job. Indeed, you should approach it more seriously than that – It is your own business so any time wasted or spent cruising the net for example is your own time and money wasted not your employers! If you are not winning as much as you would like, or if the table chosen is not producing the results you are expecting, you should take a break to try reverse your fortunes before you get too deep in the hole.
Probably the best thing about full time poker is that you can pick and choose events much more freely. Subject just maybe to family time demands you can play the poker tournaments and poker games most suited to you and not have to find time at evenings and weekends.
You should also have a lot of successful and profitable poker play experience before you take the full time step and have a good sized bankroll to start with – as you will need to withdraw from it for your own income.
If you are an up and down player, good at times, really bad at others and can now and again go on the tilt and lose a lot then full time is not for you. You’ll only end up crashing bigtime and back at the job center! If this is you keep practicing and get better until you reach the mental level needed for full time play.
Tournament Poker is where you will win your most money, but before giving up your day job, become a great player and get some cash behind you.
